AlzCare was formed in December of 1998 to provide assisted
living services to persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia's with
two New Braunfels locations. Our Cross Street location is for residents
with early stages of Alzheimer's, and our Rock Street location,
is for residents with mid to late stages of Alzheimer's. Both locations are licensed for no more than 16 to maintain a small, intimate setting in which staff, resident and family alike have the opportunity to form relationships that are a part of the therapeutic milieu of AlzCare. Additionally, ALL employees go through a criminal background check process, as well as the state misconduct registry check. Our purpose was clear from the beginning…to restore some of the quality of life that has been lost due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementia's. AlzCare does this by offering residences that provide safety, security, dignity and independence in a setting that is better than home and generously staffed by well trained, compassionate and engaging caregivers. Staffing We have a nurse on staff that oversees the medical care of each resident. Our nurses will also work with the resident’s physician when minor illnesses or medication problems arise. In addition, we have a local practitioner available for "house calls" to most facilities. During waking hours, our staffing ratios range from 1 caregiver for every 5 residents. During sleeping hours, our ratio is 1 to 7.5. Types of Care The types of Dementia that we see most frequently at AlzCare are Alzheimer’s type and Vascular type. We will perform pre-admission assessments and evaluations on individuals with other types of Dementia. Our staff are specially trained to deal with individuals who display most of the common (and not so common) behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. Behaviors such as hoarding (hiding objects), wandering, confusion, disorientation, paranoia, reluctance to bathe, difficulty dressing, layering of clothing, problems with incontinence and other disease related behaviors are all behaviors that we are trained to work with and manage. Alzcare New Braunfels has TWO locations: Our Cross Street location is for residents with early stages of Alzheimer's, while our Rock Street location, provides care for residents with mid to late stages of Alzheimer's. Screening Process We screen our residents carefully to make sure that we can provide the level of care that they need and that they will be a good “fit” with the other residents at AlzCare. We also perform assessments to ascertain that the potential resident is able to benefit from the program that we offer. Residents are required to have a primary physician of their
choice. AlzCare does not contract with nor have any financial relationship with
any physician or physician group. We allow the primary physician access to our
homes in order to minimize resident inconvenience with travel. Our homes are
staffed with a licensed nurse and are visited by a nurse practitioner. Activities Special events, parties, outside social, and leisure activities are scheduled regularly. Our daily routine of social and leisure activities is designed to respond to all of the residents needs. We encourage family and friends to join in any of the activities and events, especially holiday parties. All of our residents are invited and encouraged to attend and participate in the activities; however some residents may choose to just observe or decline to join in. We honor the residents’ rights to make choices and we will offer alternative events and activities as appropriate. After lunch most residents wind down to digest their food and listen to music or watch television. Please note all of our television is viewed via video only. We carefully select the programs we show. The residents enjoy Lawrence Welk, Lucille Ball, Nature videos, Gospel Hour favorites and many more positive programs. Respite Care We offer day care when space is available. We are licensed by the state to have only 16 residents so even one extra person for 2 hours or overnight would not be possible. We must assess the resident the same way we would assess if that person were moving in to be a permanent resident. We look forward to assisting you in any way possible.
