What is an Aging Life Care Professional?
An Aging Life Care Professional, also known as a Geriatric Care Manager, is a health and human services specialist who acts as a guide and advocate for families who are caring for older relatives or disabled adults. The Aging Life Care Professional is educated and experienced in any of several fields related to aging life care / care management, including, but not limited to nursing, gerontology, social work, or psychology, with a specialized focus on issues related to aging and elder care.The Aging Life Care
Professional assists clients in attaining their maximum functional potential. The individual’s independence is encouraged, while safety and security concerns are also addressed.
Aging Life Care Professionals are able to address a broad range of issues related to the well-being of their client. They also have extensive knowledge about the costs, quality, and availability of resources in their communities.
Aging Life Care Professionals become the “coach” and families or clients the “team captain.”
Aging Life Care Professionals are members of the Aging Life Care Association™ (ALCA) and differ from Patient Advocates, Senior Advisors, Senior Navigators, and Elder Advocates. ALCA members must meet stringent education, experience, and certification requirements of the organization, and all members are required to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

Doug Reuschel is the owner of Sundance Care Specialists – an Aging Life Care Company in Houston, Texas. Doug has worked with individuals and families since 1986. He has worked in hospital environments, a psychiatric hospital and held a variety of positions in healthcare management.
His background includes working as a Social Worker, Case Manager, Nursing Facility Administrator, and Assisted Living Manager. He now works as an Advanced Aging Life Care Professional and is a Care Manager ~ Certified (CMC) through the National Academy of Certified Care Managers.
His passion for helping people led him to serve on the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association (San Antonio) for 6 years. He is the past Chair of the Elder Services Provider’s Network at United Way of Greater Houston, past President of the South Central Chapter of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers which encompasses a 4 state region.
He served on the Friends of CanCare Advisory Board and holds membership in the Houston Gerontological Society, American Society on Aging, Aging Life Care Association™ (ALCA), National Care Planning Council and the Houston Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.
Doug has been a speaker at Elder Law, Estate Planning, and Guardianship Conferences, is a frequent speaker at local Caregivers Conferences and has made presentations to numerous family groups, professional groups in addition to facilitating support groups. Having worked with an intergenerational population for many years, Doug is skilled in finding resources, and guiding families towards services. He acts as a personal agent or advocate to insure that services are being carried out as planned.
